Why drains back up in storm season, and why it is usually not your pipe
Every wet season, houses across Collier County get a backup on the same afternoon as a storm. The coincidence is the diagnosis: when rain and a backup arrive together, the problem is usually not inside the property.
A storm-season sewer backup happens when heavy rain enters the sanitary sewer through cracks and loose joints faster than the system can move it away. The extra volume raises the level in the main, and when the main is full the nearest low opening becomes the relief point — which is frequently a fixture inside a house rather than a manhole in the street.
The rain does not stay in the storm drains
Sanitary sewers and storm drains are separate systems, but rain gets into the sanitary one anyway, through the pipe itself.
The sanitary sewer that takes waste from your house is a different system from the storm drains that take rain off the street. They are supposed to stay separate. In practice they do not, and the mechanism has a name in the industry: inflow and infiltration.
During heavy rainfall, stormwater infiltrates aging sewer joints and increases flow volume beyond what the system was built to carry (United Air Temp, 2026). It arrives through cracks, loose joints and damaged pipe sections across the whole network — millions of gallons soaking into the ground during a summer storm and finding their way in (Aztec Plumbing, 2026).
That matters because a sanitary sewer is sized for sewage, not for weather. The volume it handles on a dry Tuesday is a fraction of what a strong August storm can push into it. When the arriving flow exceeds the capacity to move it away, the level in the main rises — and everything connected to that main is connected to the rising level.
This is why the timing is such a strong signal. A blockage in your own lateral does not care whether it is raining. A system that is taking on stormwater does, and it fails on exactly the schedule you would expect: during and just after the heaviest rain.
What actually pushes it into the house
A full main has to relieve somewhere. Plumbing finds the lowest opening, and that can be indoors.
When stormwater overwhelms portions of the system faster than wastewater can move away, the result is a sanitary sewer overflow (MetroConnects, 2026). The hydraulic pressure that builds pushes flow backward through the network rather than forward (United Air Temp, 2026).
Backward means toward the properties. Your lateral connects your house to the main, and it has no valve in it by default — it is an open path in both directions. If the level in the main rises above the level of your lowest fixture, gravity does the rest, and the lowest fixture is where it appears. In a single-storey Southwest Florida house that is typically a shower or tub, because those sit closest to the floor.
The important consequence is diagnostic. If a ground-floor shower and a toilet back up simultaneously while it is raining hard, and the upstairs fixtures are unaffected, that pattern points at the system rather than at a blockage in one branch. A single blocked branch affects the fixtures on that branch. A full main affects whatever is lowest.
The power failure problem, which is worse
Sewage does not always flow downhill. A lot of it is pumped, and pumps need electricity.
Southwest Florida is flat, so a great deal of wastewater does not travel by gravity at all. It is lifted, station by station, toward the treatment plant. The City of Naples sewer service area alone runs 120 pump stations (City of Naples, 2026), feeding a 10 million gallon per day advanced treatment facility (City of Naples, 2026).
A pump station is a wet well that fills continuously and is emptied by electric pumps. Cut the power and the filling does not stop. During hurricanes, lift station power outages have caused sanitary sewer systems to back up and overflow from manholes — in one Florida example, roughly 400,320 gallons of wastewater (MetroConnects, 2026).
The scale during a major storm is considerable. Tens of millions of gallons of wastewater flowed into Tampa Bay waterways during Hurricane Milton (WUSF, 2024), and Hurricane Debby produced sewage spills across local waterways in the same region (WUSF, 2024). Those are the volumes that reached the environment; the same hydraulics are what push flow toward the low points on the network.
This is the part homeowners are least prepared for, because it decouples the risk from the rain. A storm that knocks out power to a nearby lift station can produce a backup in weather that has already passed, and it will not be resolved by anything done inside the house.
What actually protects a property
One device addresses this specific failure. Drain cleaning does not.
The device that addresses a backup originating outside the property is a backwater valve — a one-way valve fitted in the lateral that allows flow out and closes against flow coming back in. It is the only intervention on this list that acts on the actual mechanism, because it works on the direction of flow rather than on what is in the pipe.
It is worth being direct about the alternatives. Clearing your drains does nothing for this, because your drains are not blocked. Jetting the lateral does nothing, for the same reason, and on older pipe it carries its own risks. A camera inspection is genuinely useful, but for a different purpose: it establishes whether your lateral is also contributing infiltration through its own cracks and joints, which is a real problem worth fixing but not the one causing tonight's backup.
Two smaller things do help. Keeping the drains and grates near the property clear reduces the surface water pooling around them — residents of Naples are encouraged to help clear the drains near their homes before, during and after heavy rainfall (City of Naples, 2026). And knowing which of your fixtures is lowest tells you in advance where a backup will appear, which is worth more at 9pm during a storm than it sounds.
What does not help is running more water. If a backup is in progress, every flush and every load of laundry adds to a system that has already told you it cannot take more.
What comes back up is not water
Sewage is classified as Category 3, and that changes the cleanup from drying to removal.
It is worth being blunt about what has entered the property, because it determines what happens next and people routinely underestimate it. Sewage backup is Category 3 water, commonly called black water, and it carries bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens (Florida Emergency Cleaning, 2026).
The practical consequence is that this is not a drying job. Porous materials that have been in contact with Category 3 water — carpet, underlay, drywall, insulation — almost always require complete removal rather than drying and restoration (Florida Emergency Cleaning, 2026). A fan and a dehumidifier are the correct response to a clean-water leak and the wrong response to this.
That is also why the cost profile is so different from what people expect. The volume of water may be modest and the damage still substantial, because the driver is contamination rather than saturation. A few inches across a bedroom floor can mean the carpet, the underlay and the bottom section of the drywall, none of which is a function of how much came in.
For the same reason, the sensible sequence is to stop using the affected fixtures, keep people and pets out of the area, and get the contamination assessed before anyone starts moving furniture back. The instinct to clean it up quickly is understandable and it is usually the more expensive path.
The part almost nobody checks until it is too late
Standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover sewer backup. It is a separate endorsement.
This is the most expensive gap in the whole subject, and it has nothing to do with plumbing. Standard homeowners insurance policies generally do not cover sewer backup damage — the cover exists, but only as an optional endorsement that has to be added (Farmers Insurance, 2026).
The economics are worth knowing before rather than after. A sewer and drain backup endorsement typically runs in the region of $40 to $70 a year, with coverage limits usually between $5,000 and $25,000 (The Zebra, 2026), and it generally extends to damaged personal belongings, water removal and cleanup, and repairs to floors and walls (Farmers Insurance, 2026).
Set that against a Category 3 event that takes out carpet, underlay and drywall across a room or two, and the asymmetry is obvious. It is also the one item on this page that costs nothing to check: the policy either has the endorsement or it does not, and finding out takes a phone call.

It is here because for most households facing a storm-season backup, the insurance question determines the financial outcome far more than anything a plumber does afterward.
How to tell which one you have
Three questions separate a system event from a blockage on your property.
The first is timing. Did it start during or shortly after heavy rain, or during a power outage affecting the area? A yes points outward. A backup that began on a dry week points at your own lateral.
The second is scope. Are multiple fixtures affected at once, particularly the lowest ones, with higher fixtures unaffected? That is the signature of a rising level rather than a blocked branch. One fixture misbehaving on its own is almost always local.
The third is recurrence. Does it happen every wet season and clear on its own once the rain stops? A blockage does not resolve itself. A system at capacity does, as soon as the capacity returns.
Where the answers point outward, the useful call is to the utility as well as to a plumber, because a sanitary sewer overflow is something they need to know about and may already be responding to. Where they point inward, it is an ordinary drainage problem and the normal diagnosis applies.
And where they are mixed — which is common — both can be true at once. A lateral with cracks and open joints is contributing to the very infiltration that overwhelms the main, and it is also more likely to block. That is the case where a camera earns its money, because it is the only way to see which part of the problem is actually yours.
